A transmission is one of the most costly components to repair or replace. Speedy Auto Service helps prevent problems before they start.

Transmission problems can be caused by low fluid levels, poor fluid consistency, or by debris in the system.

At Speedy Auto Service we can show how to you detect transmission problems early on so we can correct any minor problem before it causes costly damage.

Auto Transmission Maintenance

Here are several maintenance tips to prevent transmission problems before they start:

  • Have your transmission fluid changed in accordance with the maintenance schedule recommended by your car’s manufacturer.

  • Have a Speedy technician inspect your transmission fluid. Low or dirty fluid increases wear on your components that may cause long term damage.

  • Watch for fluid leaks. A reddish fluid where you parked is an indication of a transmission fluid leak.

  • Change your filters regularly. A dirty or clogged filter can cause a transmission shifting problem as well as other issues.

  • If you hear or feel a change when shifting, have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible. Speedy Auto Service has over sixty local transmission repair shops located throughout Canada to assist you in finding the problem.

How Often Should You Change Your Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid should be flushed according to your car’s manufacture’s owner manual. We recommend you have your transmission fluid levels and cleanliness checked regularly to avoid future problems.

A transmission fluid flush removes all of the dirty transmission fluid from your vehicle’s pan as well as lines. A transmission fluid flush differs from a fluid change in that with a transmission fluid change, only the fluid in the pan is being replaced.

Types of Transmission Fluid

Automatic Transmission Fluid

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is a complex type of oil used to ensure the safe and proper functioning of the transmission system. It lubricates moving parts and inhibits rust with anti-oxidation and anti-wear additives. More heat is generated with an Automatic Transmission, than a Manual Transmission, meaning your fluid will break down over time due to high temperatures.

Manual Transmission Fluid

If you have a manual transmission, your owner’s manual might recommend Automatic Transmission Fluid. With modern changes in vehicles, this is not a mistake, so don’t be surprised. The classic manual transmission fluid used in cars is thick, and grease like in texture. Manual Transmission Fluid needs to be flushed every so often as it’s in direct contact with bearings and gears, which contaminate the fluid as they wear out over time.
