Shocks and Struts

Your car’s shocks and struts keep you safe and comfortable by absorbing impact. They make sure the tires stay on the road, ensuring your vehicle’s traction and safe handling. Shocks and struts keep you from bottoming out when you hit a pothole or bump in the road, and they provide optimal stability when turning, avoiding obstacles, and stopping.

How Do Shocks and Struts Work?

Each wheel has a shock or strut connecting it to the car’s suspension and frame. Shocks and struts provide support for the vehicle’s weight, and resistance to both up and down and side-to-side movement, minimizing bounce, sway or dive and maximizing stability. The difference between shocks and struts is that shocks may have coil springs on the outside, while struts often include springs within the assembly. As the vehicle moves up and down, it compresses both springs and hydraulic fluid, whose movement inside the shock or strut is controlled by valves. Both serve to slow and correct the motion of the vehicle, creating stability.

Pay Attention to Your Car’s Shocks and Struts

Not only do shocks and struts provide comfort and stability, but shocks and struts that work well also improve your vehicle’s stopping distance. If you experience any of these warning signs, your shocks and struts may need replacing:

  • Rocking back and forth after stopping suddenly
  • Drifting to left or right when braking at higher speeds
  • More than three bounces when crossing a bump or rough patch
  • Fluid leaking from shock or strut
  • Tilting forward or “nose-diving” when braking
  • Vibrating steering wheel
  • Dents on the body of your shocks or struts

If your shocks and struts need attention, check with the certified Speedy technicians to stay safe and comfortable on the road.
